De titel is ontleend aan het gedicht Eliosa to Abelard van Alexander Pope (1688-1744), over de tragische liefdesgeschiedenis van Héloise en Petrus Abaelardus, waarin alleen de vergetelheid de heldin troost biedt. Een citaat uit dit gedicht wordt in de film gebruikt door een van de acteurs:

"How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd "

Het personage Mary (Kirsten Dunst) citeert Nietsche uit een bekend citatenboek:
